A gem of the Balearic archipelago, Menorca is a low-key island which has traditionally shied away from package tourism.
Its gorgeous landscapes of rolling hills, deep gorges, and rocky cliffs offer adventure enthusiasts a unique chance to connect with the great outdoors. Meanwhile, the unspoiled turquoise waters and spectacular beaches for which the island is famed, offer a serene respite for sun-seekers, lovers of marine life, and couples alike.
Radiating the island’s charm is an eclectic accommodation scene. Throughout my many visits, I have stayed in hotels ranging from beachfront boutiques to soaring hilltop resorts. Here are my favourite cool and unusual hotels in Menorca, Spain (in no particular order)…
1. Lago Resort Menorca – Casas del Lago Adults Only – a hip, trendy and very Instagrammable upscale resort located near the Marina of Cala’n Bosch
Part of the eco-conscious Lago Resort, Casas del Lago brings a new concept of modern luxury to the discerning traveller.
Lying in the heart of the resort of Cala’n Bosch, this stunning collection of opulent homes centres around a large turquoise pool dotted by Bali-style sunbeds and poolside cabanas.
During my stay I witnessed some of the most majestic sunsets from the terrace, and my room was made intimate and soothing by the wood and rattan decorations, beamed ceiling, and copper-toned bathroom.
The resort is brimming with energy, with a vibrant tone set by an in-house DJ who turns the pool area into an electric day club.

2. Lago Resort Menorca – Suites del Lago Adults Only – a beautiful boutique resort with a cool boho vibe
A glorious saltwater pool with hydromassage jets, floating Balinese sunbeds, and nature-inspired décor combine at this five-star resort.
Each one of the suites overlooks either the pool or the marina, and comes with a large terrace. My terrace actually had a private plunge pool, which was a very welcome treat! Suites del Lago is one of four accommodations that constitute the Lago Resort, and its ample use of wood, natural fibres and muted earthy tones add an authentic Menorcan flavour throughout.
I thoroughly enjoyed the beach club ambiance around the central pool area, which is without a doubt the hotel’s star of the show, and is girdled by cosy beanbags.

3. Faustino Gran Relais & Chateaux – a gorgeous, chic and very Instagrammable boutique hotel located in a former palace that offers refined service and a panoramic Mediterranean vista
Combining the best of past and present, this timeless 16th-century palace lies in the heart of the ancient Ciudadella, and incorporates a hint of vintage detailing to every space.
Upon arriving at the ivory-hued stone façade and being greeted with high arched ceilings, wrought iron banisters, and period wood furnishings, I felt totally immersed into Menorca’s bygone history. The rooms are modish and spacious, and an unexpected urban panache is added through the arbitrarily placed cartoons and sketched artwork.
The inviting Fuego restaurant, replete with a decorative wine wall, is a great space to enjoy local dishes embellished with an international touch.

Luxury and sustainability go hand in hand at this eclectic carbon-neutral resort. It clasps a picturesque stretch of Menorca’s southern coast, and is among the island’s most glamorous hotels.
Here, the serenity of a traditional whitewashed finca is combined effortlessly with the trademark grandeur of the Gran Meliá brand.
Neat architectural flourishes, an eye-catching layering of natural materials, and wide arches which frame the surrounding seafront all bring a touch of class to Villa Le Blanc. The staff have mastered the art of being omnipresent while still offering a sense of seclusion and independence, and I thought the bar service was top-notch!

The on-site Blue Spa is Menorca’s most complete thermal unit, and has been designed with finesse to establish total well-being through the essence of water. The open concept of the restaurant means you can fully interact with the chefs as they cook up your meals, and learn a lot about Menorcan gastronomy in the process.

In my opinion, Mahón’s most extraordinary views are at Artiem Capri’s rooftop terrace, where you can spend your days gazing across the city’s gleaming rooftops from a shimmering infinity pool or hot tub.
This is the perfect hotel to combine work and leisure, with a fresh modern look maximizing the natural light, comfortable seating areas dotted around, and trendsetting tech-forward amenities on offer.

You will find a luxuriant garden, a shared lounge, and a bar within the property’s grounds. The staff behind the tour desk were exceptionally helpful to me, and helped me draft up the most memorable Menorcan island itinerary.
Relaxing around the resort’s gorgeous pool brought me a pure harmony of body and mind, which extended to my spacious, amenity-laden guestroom where stunning beach views were an ever-present feature. Another stand-out offering here is the gastronomy.
From breakfast to dinner, you will be treated to a fine blend of Italian, Mediterranean and international culinary delights.

This glorious adults-only hilltop retreat overlooks the resplendent north coast of Menorca. From here, you can cycle or hike to gorgeous beaches on the island’s northernmost tip, if you want to connect with the picturesque landscape and combine your stay with exercise.
Son Vives is a typical Menorcan finca and is still very much a working farm, and horses roam the surrounding countryside. I thought the blend of cosy country-style furnishings with the functionality of a stylish upmarket resort was spot on.
I thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience at the intimate guests-only restaurant, which incorporates homegrown ingredients plucked from the hotel’s vegetable and herb gardens.

The contemporary styling of an urban retreat is blended seamlessly with the ‘vacation’ feel of an upscale resort, all rooted in eco-friendly practices. I thought the two-tiered sun terrace was outstanding, which featured a saltwater swimming pool, plenty of space for sunbathing, and an L-shaped tub with hydrotherapy jets.
