A land of beer gardens, world famous festivals, jolly fun loving locals and fairytale-esque scenery – from romantic half timbered towns to towering castles and ancient dense forests, Bavaria – Southern Germany – is a place that has induced a fascination in many an overseas traveller. Some of my family hail from Bavaria and back in the summer I paid them a visit, taking the chance absorb the sights of both the gorgeous unspoilt countryside and beautiful small historic towns at the same time. Perfectly preserved by a sparse population and high regard for a traditional way of life, this part of Germany easily offers some of the most picturesque scenery. I visited the Bavarian Forest (which forms the largest continuous woodland area in Europe), the mighty Danube River and the historic UNESCO listed town of Regensburg – the first capital of Bavaria where two millennia of history has bequeathed the city some of its finest architectural heritage and then finally stopping at the small but beautifully formed Straubing, the seat of an old duchy and a colourful Renaissance town with a distinctive Gothic belfry. Here is my journey in BIG Pictures…

14 September, 2016 at 1:28 pmSimilar to Bavarian towns but less known is Lviv. It has the same architecture styles dating back to the 12th century (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Only 80km east of Poland!
