Smart travellers guide: 8 products you’ll always find in my luggage!

Whether I’m jetting off to a far-flung destination or just planning a long drive down to the coast, there are certain products I never leave home without, here are my eight favourite travel beauty products…

Mineral make up

Most cosmetics, unfortunately, tend to clog the pores, aggressive sensitivity and suck moisture from your skin. This is why I only use mineral make up when I travel. Mineral cosmetics are actually made from compressed natural minerals and do not contain any oil or wax additives. Not only is it kind to sensitive skin but it’s also non-comedogenic; this means it doesn’t clog pores and lead to blemishes and the stuff is so gentle it won’t harm your skin if you forget to take it off at night (which let’s face it, we’ve all done while travelling). It also absorbs excess oil and some of the minerals even have beneficial health results for the skin – so not only do you get to look great (in a natural way not overly caked in a make-up way) your skin will look even better after using. Trust me when travelling, mineral make-up will be one of your best friends!

The LUNA2 by FOREO

Although I’m a sucker for beauty gadgets, I’m also extremely fussy about them and will only take one on my travels if it’s an essential part of my beauty regime – and if it can fit into my luggage without taking up too much room! That’s why I love the LUNA2 made by the Swedish company FOREO. Although manual sonic cleansing devices have been on the market for quite a few years now, this one stands out of the crowd with an innovative design and an enhanced T-sonic function. This trademarked function ensures optimal facial cleansing and even features an anti-wrinkle system designed to minimize the appearance of blemishes and issues related to ageing skin. I have to be honest, I usually steer clear of many of the sonic devices due to having easily aggravated and sensitive skin but this one comes in a range of four varieties including a canny model designed for sensitive skin (That’s for me!)- which is mauve in colour.

I use the cleansing brush side, with a gentle cleanser and the anti-ageing massage side, to gently massage Vitamin E oil into my skin. This works wonders especially when travelling through different temperatures, weather – The LUNA 2 has become my one-stop solution for all my skin pampering now.

Vitamin E oil

Annoyingly I suffer from a condition called salicylate sensitivity which means even ingredients such as aloe vera can provoke a reaction in me (and a red and swollen face is the last thing you want on holiday)! This is why I always pack a bottle of pure organic Vitamin E oil. As long as there are no other fillers, the oil acts as a power anti-inflammatory soothing and hydrating sensitive skin and of course, it’s natural without any nasty synthetic ingredients which have hormone-disrupting effects. Vitamin E also works to block free radicals from the body, which play a large part in the ageing process. So not only does it effectively hydrate skin even in harsh environments, fighting off those dastardly free radicals means fewer wrinkles and more youthful looking skin!

Charcoal Teeth Whitener

Although it leaves you with quite a messy sink (!) I wouldn’t leave home without my little tub of charcoal tooth whitener. The grimy substance effectively removes stains and discolouration from the surface of your teeth to whiten and brighten your smile and will also absorb bad toxins and bacteria from the mouth improving your gum health and breath. It’s natural, not tested on animals, vegan, has no nasty fillers and is gentle on enamel too.

Natural Sunscreen

If you travelling to sunnier climes it’s always a good idea to pack and wear sunscreen. While it’s true that the sunlight can provide all sorts of health benefits, too much exposure can seriously damage your skin, and of course, even put your life at risk. Sadly there are many sunscreens on the market which contain toxic ingredients that are not only hormone disrupters but can also cause allergic reactions. Oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate are some of the worst offenders. To protect my skin and maintain a healthy glow on my travels I always opt for a more natural mineral sunscreen.

ISSA2

I always use an electric toothbrush at home but it’s too bulky to carry with me in my case. However, I’m not regretting one of my recent investments – the ISSA2, which is lightweight and easy to carry.

Product wise, it is made from silicone and is engineered to eliminate plaque buildup without irritating gums. The toothbrush looks good, is soft on the gums and is designed with travelling in mind – there’s a nifty travel lock which helps to prevent the toothbrush coming on whilst in your bag and also comes in a cute pouch and easily my favourite features is that it can be charged anywhere via USB cable (so no bulky docking station to carry around either) and each one hour charge lasts up to 365 uses – incredible! So, practically I don’t need to carry the entire shebang with me.

Charcoal facial wipes

You’ve probably guessed by now I’m quite a fan of charcoal beauty products and another product I’ll always take on my travels is The Yes To Tomatoes Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Wipes, formulated with charcoal to detoxify, remove dirt and impurities. I love them because after you come in from a night out on your holiday you just lift the lid and wipe all your make up away! It’s also a great natural product, cruelty-free and formulated without parabens, SLS and silicones.

Macadamia nut oil

While Vitamin E oil is perfect my face, I always pack macadamia nut oil to keep my hair in good condition whilst on my travels. When my hair starts to get dry and frazzled from the sea and the sun, this incredible nut oil transforms into glossy locks again. Squalene is the naturally occurring antioxidant in Macadamia oil that helps to calm the hair of frizz, tangles, and dullness. Definitely a travel beauty essential!

Born in England, with a few family roots from Bavaria, and a heart in Scandinavia I've always been a bit of a restless soul. My first true adventure began as a six month voyage around South East Asia as a fresh faced backpacker and ever since I've lived a semi nomadic existence, clocking up over 40 countries on trips and living in Dublin, South East Asia and Australia. I'm a lover of US Road Trips, deserted beaches bathed in warm glow of a sunset, Cuban mojitos, easy-on-the-eye travel destinations far away from the tourist crowds and all things Scandinavian - from cloudberry liquors to Scandi Noirs. When not wandering the world, you'll find me walking my rescue dog in leafy South West London, strolling around the Brighton Laines on random day trips, hunting for photogenic landscapes or daydreaming about returning to my all time favourite places in the world; Havana, Copenhagen, Italy, Thailand and the frozen landscapes of a wintry Iceland.
